Palm Beach AutoFest 2008 Coming This Fall To Mangonia Park? |
07/02/2008 - If Tahrie Anderson has his way, Palm Beach AutoFest 2008 will become a public event to be held on a Saturday, September 6th, in the parking lot of the Palm Beach Jai-Alai Fronton (1415 W 45th St).
Anderson came before the Town Council on July 1st, 2008 and outlined his proposal for the event which will include several categories of custom cars, trucks and alternative fuel vehicles. Additional plans for the proposed event call for musical entertainment, food, beverages and awards presentations for each class and/or custom vehicle category.
Upon hearing Anderson's information concerning the proposed event, the general consensus of the Town Council was positive. Palm Beach County District-7 Commissioner Addie L. Greene was in attendance at the meeting and gave her initial endorsement as well. In addition to exhibiting custom cars and trucks of all makes and styles, Anderson informed the Town Council that the purpose of the proposed event is to raise funds for recreational activities in Mangonia Park, the Police Athletic League (PAL) and the Palm Beach County Urban League Guild's Male Empowerment Task Force.
Although specific details and site arrangements still have to be worked out, Anderson expressed confidence in the fact that he could bring the event from the planning stages to reality by the aforementioned event date.
"It will be alot of work between now and then", says Anderson. "But I believe I can do it."
Persons interested in volunteering, becoming a vendor, exihibitor, or participant should contact Mr. Tahrie Anderson at (561) 294-8290. We'll release further updates on this story and propsed event as they become available. | |

| Town Council Approves Name Dedication(s) of Municipal Park, Town Hall, etc.
07/02/2008 - On Tuesday evening at their regular meeting, the Mangonia Park Town Council voted on a proposal by Vice-Mayor Mark K. Trueblood to have various town properties, buildings and public venues officially named after notable persons who have been responsible for the improvement of the town in matters such as raising financial funds and awarding of grants for public facilities, civic duty and contributions to the citizens of the community.
The Town Council approved the renaming of 53rd Street Park as "Addie L. Greene Park", as recommended by Mayor William H. Albury, III, due to her continual contributions in the improvement of our community. The Palm Beach County District-7 Commissioner worked with Town Manager Lee Leffingwell and obtained county funding for upgrades to the park on 53rd Street as well as the beautification of the east and west entrances to the Bryn Mahr residential homes area. Town Council members went on to mention several other areas in which Ms. Greene has assisted the town during her tenure as both a Town Councilwoman and a State Representative.
Vice-Mayor Trueblood proposed that the picnic area at the town's park be named after local community and political activist, Willie J. Thomas, a resident of Mangonia Hills for over 30 years.
"Mr. Thomas' contribution to the residents of this community, serving as our own Paul Revere at times, is unmeasurable", said the Vice-Mayor. The Town Council approved the area to be named the "Willie J. Thomas Picnic Grounds".
Further name dedication approval was given concerning the renaming of the Town Hall as the "Mangonia Park Municipal Center", which would include the name dedication(s) of the "Earl L. Mixon Administrative Office" and the "William H. Albury, III Council Chambers".
Mr. Mixon, who passed away this past April, was a former Town Council member in the early to late 1980's. His "welcoming" personality and dedication to various civic projects was cited as reasons for his public recognition. Albury, the current Mayor, has been a member of the Town Council for over a decade, and has been "very" instrumental in the financial oversight and recovery of the town.
Said Vice-Mayor Trueblood, "If not for the constant past efforts of both Mayor Albury and the former Vice-Mayor, Councilman McConnell, our town may not have been in a position to remain an incorporated municipality".
Other facilities at the newly named Addie L. Greene Park were renamed as well. The pavillion is now known as the "Clarence L. McConnell Pavillion". So named after current and longtime Councilman Clarence "Shorty" McConnell. The field was dedicated to the name of former Major League Baseball Player and Hall of Famer, Jackie Robinson ("Jackie Robinson Youth Ball Field"). The basketball courts were dedicated to former area high school basketball coach, Floyd Andrews (Roosevelt, North Shore, Twin Lakes and Palm Beach Lakes), for his contribution to our area youth during his coaching tenure that spanned 31 years from 1967 to 1998 ("Floyd Andrews Basketball Courts"). Coach Andrews eventually retired from teaching at the conclusion of the 2003 school year at Palm Beach Lakes in West Palm Beach.
"Not too many people outside of our town are aware of the contributions and accomplishments of both Mr. Thomas and Councilman McConnell", said Vice-Mayor Trueblood. "But, I can assure you that each one of those men were deserving of some kind of public recognition for the civic efforts and their personal dedication to our community."
"Coach Andrews in my opinion is underappreciated for his contribution to not only our community, but to the high school coaching profession as well", added the Vice-Mayor. "Here's a man who won over 400 games and numerous district, regional, and state championships during his high school career and he isn't even in the FHSAA Hall Of Fame! What's wrong that picture? |
